Brief 3 – Process

I really liked the idea of using the photography studio to take my photos in. I like how pictures taken in a studio look professional and clean. I decided to research some photographers who specifically take photos in studios, and came across Richard Avedon. He’s a famous fashion photographer, famous for taking photos of celebrities such ac Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. Almost all of his photos are in black & white, this is a unique trait to him, and something he carried on throughout all of his work.

This is a photo taken by Richard Avedon which I took inspiration from. I like the plain background and how the photo has been taken mid-movement. The model looks very natural, but at the same time it looks like he’s been instructed to do this movement by the photographer.

This was my aim when taking photos of Estera (friend), asking her to do certain movements, then taking photos as I chose. I applied Avedon’s trait of black & white to my self-portrait. However, with my stranger it was a lot harder to instruct him to do anything, or any specific movements. I also decided not to use the black & white filter on the stranger because I was happy with how the tones of the image turned out, I didn’t edit the photo at all. With the pictures of myself and Estera, I had to crop them to make the subjects more central. I also increased the saturation on the photo of Estera, to enhance the bright colour of her hair.
